March 20
Silver-Days
Elevations. slope angles and aspects:
7000-10200', angles over 35°, all aspects
Avalanche activity:
Shallow naturals were first noted in Grizzly Gulch.
Most were sluffs
caused by gusty winds during the little storm.
Skier induced slides were noticed in upper Days Fork,
the result of cornice kicking.
Ski cuts did produce one long running sluff in Hideaway Park, nw facing
about 500' vertical descent.
Would imagine warming initiated rollers on the south facing, but none weres observed.
Slopes skied:
East bowl Silver Fork, west bowl Silver Fork, Hideaway Park entry to Days and the finger chutes, exiting to Spruces.
Snow conditions:
An optimistic 4" of new snow. Old surfaces were mostly crusted. Winds did create some shallow soft slabs
noted on the south edge of Cardiac ridge. Ski cuts sluffs were benign (Hideaway Park exception). Sun warming and day time heating turned exposed aspects to mashed potatoes, except for shady upper elevations.
Weather:
Bluebird. Light winds and mild temperatures.
Evaluation:
New snow instability should be mostly settled out, leaving lingering shallow wind drifting.and daytime heating the primary concerns.
